INTRODUCING WALKING CITY TRAIL NIGHT HIKES

Boston! It's been a good long while since the last series of guided hikes on the Walking City Trail. And this winter, I'm shaking things up and introducing a new breed of WCT hiking event...

That's right.  We're going to push through the excessive darkness of the winter months, resist the seasonal lethargy, and discover the beauty of hiking through Boston at night. These hikes will be around 1-2 miles in length and there's no signup required. For each one, we'll meet at a public transit system, set off on our journey, and conclude at a location with grub, grog, and access to trains and/or buses. Each of these hikes will be scheduled for "after work" hours on a week night and hikes will be announced with about one week's notice.

All you need to do is show up and bring a few important items. First, you'll want a headlamp or a flashlight (not the one on your phone.) And when it comes to dressing for the hike, follow the classic three layer system. First, choose a cozy base layer that will keep you warm: something like UnderArmour or long underwear. Next, add an insulating middle layer like a fleece or a vest. And for your final exterior layer,  go for  a jacket that will protect you from wind, snow, or sleet.

These WCT night hikes will be "snow or shine" hikes. But in the event of dangerous weather conditions such as very cold temperatures or freezing rain, hikes will be rescheduled for a future date. Again, there's no RSVP or "ticket" purchase required for these hikes. (Donations to the trail are gratefully accepted.)

See you out there soon, after sundown.
